We University of Central Florida students lead busy lives – between classes, homework, studying, and campus events, you may feel stretched pretty thin. And yet, during the end of the term’s commencement ceremony, Dr. Hitt will call a special group of students to stand be recognized. These are the undergraduate students who, on top of everything else, completed an Honors in the Major Thesis.
What is an Honors in the Major thesis? According to the Burnett Honors College’s website, it: “Is designed to encourage the best juniors and seniors to undertake original and independent work in their major field.” Students who have completed most of their coursework and have a 3.5 GPA in their major are eligible.
So much for the “what” of doing an Honors in the Major thesis. Why should you do an undergraduate thesis?
- You can explore a topic you are passionate about. When you are writing for classes, there are only so many things you can write on. With your own thesis, you can have more freedom to conduct your own research.
- An undergraduate thesis provides an opportunity to engage with your field. Dean of the Burnett Honors College, Alvin Y. Wang, writes: “You will experience the joy of exploring ideas and concepts in depth; the accomplishment of being thoroughly conversant with an area of knowledge.”
- Writing an undergraduate thesis sets you apart from other job candidates. Want to stand out in an interview? In an article for The DM Online, Lexi Thoman states: “It was not until I started interviewing for jobs…that I realized how writing an undergraduate thesis set me apart from my competition.”
- Writing an undergraduate thesis prepares you for graduate school. An undergraduate thesis is not for everyone. You may need to focus your energies somewhere else during your last few years of college. But if you are heading to a Master’s or PhD program after your undergraduate year, you may actually be doing yourself a favor by getting your feet wet. And if you aren’t sure whether or not graduate school is right for you, this might be the perfect opportunity to explore options.
